GOVERNMENT

The City of Allegan was first organized as a village in 1838 before city incorporation in 1907. According to the 2010 census, the city population was 4,998. It is the county seat of Allegan County and lies within Allegan Township, but is administratively autonomous.

The City Manager is the chief administrative officer of the City of Allegan. The City Manager is hired by and responsible to the City Council, made up of seven elected members that include an appointed Mayor and Mayor Pro-Tem. City Council meets the second and fourth Monday of every month at Allegan City Hall, located at 231 Trowbridge Street.

Several boards and commissions made up of dedicated community volunteers report to the City Council. These include the Airport Advisory Board, the Downtown Development Authority, the Economic Development Corporation, the Historic District Commission, the Public Spaces Commission, the Planning Commission, and the Zoning Board of Appeals. 

All city department heads and staff report to the City Manager. In addition to operations at City Hall, the City of Allegan also includes a Police Department, Department of Public Works, a full service Water Utilities Department, and partnership with the Allegan Fire District.

City Hall is open Monday - Friday from 8:30am-4:30pm.
